Happy New Year! The beginning of a new year brings on award season in the arts for events that happened in the previous year.  On February 8th, the 51st Grammy Awards will take place, honoring the best work from the music industry in 2008.  In class we’ve spent time taking a guess who we think will win the awards, and the 8th grade will be looking at past winners to determine any trends that might help them make a better guess at the winners.  Who do you think will win?  Are there any songs that you think were left off the list?  Check out Grammy website for a complete list of this year’s nominees, as well as a list of the winners for every category since the Grammies started.

Music and Advertising

Can a song make a product seem cool or better than it really is?  Can an ad for a great product make you enjoy a song that you may have not found all that interesting before?  Apple has always done a great job of advertising and seeks out different music to promote the Ipod.   The newest commercial for the Ipod Touch is no exception.  What do you think of the song?  Would it sound as good without such a cool piece of technology flashy around in front of you?

History of Rap

Whether you like rap music or not, it is a stlye of music that has become a major force in the music industry. Unfortunately, the negative aspects of rap and it’s performers have drawn attention away from the more positive examples of this art form, which has long been used as a form of protest and outreach, much like the folk revival of the 1960’s.  For the past few classes, the 8th grade has been discussing the beginnings of rap music and listening to some of the important songs.  Below is a list of some of the songs we’ve discussed and links to some videos on Youtube

‘The Message’ by Grandmaster Flash

‘Planet Rock’ by Afrika Bambaataa

‘Walk This Way’ by Run DMC and Aerosmith

‘Fight the Power’ by Public Enemy

Which ones are your favorites?  Do think rap music is good?  Are today’s rap artists hurting the genre with their negative comments and image?

Welcome!

Hi everyone!  Welcome to my new blog for my music classes at McDevitt Middle School.  Here I’ll be posting comments mostly about what my 8th grade classes are listening to and discussing through out the school year.  Feel free to add your comments or suggestions.
